I thought...
... searching in Spotlight for files that were "changed today" without giving any other criteria would show me, well, all files changed today instantly. It just searches forever without showing me anything. Is this a bug? Or just a bug on my particular machine? Or am I missing something? Please _test_ your answer before answering me, because I think I _did_ try everything... :/ (I even added a "size bigger than 1 KB" rule just for the heck of it...)
(Solved in comments..., thanks!)
Comments:
I have always used the spotlight search "date:today" without quotes to search for items that I have changed today. You could try a restart or many of the 3rd party apps that will force spotlight to re-index if that is what it needs. Hope that helps.

Both the "date:today" and the CMD-F method of searching return about 24 results in 2 seconds on my PM 2x2.

A smart folder with "Last Modified" set to "Today" returns 427 items in about 10 secs on my MacBook Pro. So I think it might be just you.

Mine works fine . . . sort of. Searching for anything returns nothing and Spotlight searches forever. However, if I logout and log back in, Spotlight works normally and searching for things created today works fine. Ever since the last quicktime update, anytime I reboot, I need to logout and log back in to get spotlight to work again. So, try that.

okay. i guess spotlight was irritated somehow. i finally just ccc'ed the whole drive instead of just the new files, because i wanted to be sure. the reason: i exchanged my 60 GB drive in the macbook with a 100 GB drive. needed to back up my installation. now, after spotlight's reindexed the new drive, it works okay.

Can I send you a screendump ?
Works fine with me...

FYI: today's quicktime update fixed the spotlight problem I was having where I had to log out then back in to get any search results.
