An article at eWeek.com talks about a new chip startup, which wants to create new PowerPC chips that should widely be available at the very end of 2006. Dual core wonders, they claim. Cool enough for notebooks and appliance computers.
Of course, by then, Apple will be in the middle of moving over to intel, and even if the chip would've fitted Apple's PowerBooks and iMacs of today, by then we expect a little more, probably.
