Merom coming to MacBooks & MacBook Pros at AppleExpo Paris
According to several sources, Asustek has been ordered to produce Merom-based MacBooks, while Quanta will produce the Merom-based MacBook Pros.
While it may surprise some people that Apple would give the new processor to the consumer notebook already as well, it does make a lot of sense. First: Yonah (the processor currently used in all MacBook variants) won't become much less expensive once Merom arrives. Instead, it is simply being replaced. Second, and more important for Apple: Merom supports the 64bit extensions, and having 64bit-aware processors in the whole lineup of Macs by the time Leopard is introduced may very well be at the heart of the decision to update the MacBook as well. Plus: Back-to-school as well as the holiday season simply works better for Apple if their main product for students (and the MacBook certainly is, except for the iPod...) has seen a recent upgrade and uses the latest and greatest processors available.
If all goes well, we'll see new iMacs, MacBook Pros and MacBooks in September/October, while the Mac mini is likely to be updated/replaced at MWSF 2007.
Comments:
I don't want to hear about those complaints. And Mac users should simply adapt to the fact that in intel-world, processors are updated more frequently. If Apple stays behind the competition, they will be left behind. Imagine the complaints of finance-people if Apple has to admit that they've lost school-contracts because the MacBook wasn't performing as well as competitors' entry-level notebooks. Also keep in mind that Merom comes in at least two variants, one having less cache. It'd still be better than Yonah, and the Core 2 Duo name would give it more opportunities in the market. Holding back a product because of whining buyers of older products is no strategy for a computer-maker, in my opinion. You can always sell your old MacBook and upgrade to a new one. But you might just as well hold out until an EVEN NEWER one is released. Once Apple's got intel's rhythm about this, you'll find it normal. You sure don't WANT to go back to the times when Apple had to push Motorola/Freescale for even the smallest update to the G4 line, would you?!

Screen size, graphics card, processor (T5xxx versus T7xxx) - I think they're still distinctive. Since Apple doesn't _talk_ about "Yonah" or "Merom", anyway, I don't think that it'd really matter that much. The real giveaway is that intel will stop selling Core Duos as soon as they're selling Core 2 Duos, though. If Apple would keep the MacBook on Yonah, it'd mean they've bought way too many of those. So... No.
