intel releases T2700 2.33 GHz Core Duo
The new Yonah-family processor could be used in a silent update of both the MacBook Pro 15" and 17" models. Then again, "Merom" (the successor to Yonah, which will bring ca. 20-25% more performance at the same energy consumption level) is not so far away.
But this is one of the things I'd like Apple to do: Update the MBP now and release the Merom-version when it's ready. Basically: Everybody wins. Apple sells more first generation MBPs, because the features go up one more time near the EOL, and customers would get what's available on the processor market.
If you own a Mac mini core solo, this new processor could also be the way to go when Merom comes out. I'm sure the highend Yonah will drop in price, once its successors are out. Actually, I guess the cries have been loud enough and the next _real_ update to the MBP 15" will give it FW 800 back. The fact that the 17" still has it (and was introduced later than the 15") could be a sign. That the 13" MacBooks don't have it is pretty clear as well, since it always was considered a pro feature. I guess many 1st gen 15" MBP owners feel like guinea pigs when the next MBP 15" is released.
While not "successful" as in FW400, there's still a lot of pros using it. So even if a newer technology (simply FW1600?) comes along, we'd still not see it completely gone so soon.
If you mean "the way of the Dodo" as in how Apple moved away from SCSI over time: Yeah, why not. But you can still get SCSI cards for Macs if you really must. And as I often say: Most FW800 hardware also has FW400 compatibility. Of course, it'd then run slower, but still can be used. I guess they'll do it the other way 'round at some point. FW1200/FW1600 ports all the way with adapters for the "deprecated" FW400/FW800 hardware.
